Building Peace Through Faith and Communication
UCBC alumnus Steve Kanyangambi uses his education to inspire reconciliation and hope across eastern Congo.
For Steve Kanyangambi, peacebuilding is more than a profession; it is a calling rooted in faith. A graduate of Université Chrétienne Bilingue du Congo (UCBC), where he studied communications in the multimedia department, Steve has spent the past 11 years helping communities across eastern Congo rebuild relationships fractured by conflict.
For Steve, lasting peace begins with spiritual transformation. He credits UCBC’s unique approach to education for preparing him for this work. While many universities focus solely on intellectual development, he says UCBC’s combination of intellectual, spiritual and practical formation equips students to serve their communities with purpose.
Since 2014, Steve has worked with Restoration Ministry-OEIL (Evangelism, Intercession and Liberation), an organization dedicated to reconciliation and forgiveness. Through his work in communication and multimedia, he documents stories of transformation and shares them with wider audiences, helping others believe that peace is possible.
His work has taken him to communities throughout eastern Congo, including Bunia, Butembo, Oicha, Mangina, Dungu, Durba and Ingbokolo. Along the way, he has witnessed remarkable examples of reconciliation: broken families restored, former enemies choosing forgiveness and villages rebuilt by those who once helped destroy them.
“I have seen God’s hand at work in ways no one could have imagined,” Steve says. “Where others said peace was impossible, I saw unity return.”
Although the work is challenging, Steve remains committed. He believes peace is not something that can be imposed from outside but must be built and nurtured. Restoration Ministry-OEIL is working to do just that.
“If peace was possible in Bunia,” he says, “why not here?”
