Congratulations to Adelphine Angemito on being selected as a 2025 Mandela Washington Fellow—a prestigious recognition of her leadership, service, and commitment to community transformation.
Adelphine was selected from a competitive pool of over 700 young African leaders to join the prestigious fellowship. She was placed at Louisiana State University (LSU) as part of the Leadership in Civic Engagement track. She is one of five UCBC alumni / staff members have been awarded the fellowship!
The fellowship included intensive leadership training, professional exchanges, personalized project-focused coaching, and a range of immersive site visits. These experiences are designed to inspire, challenge, and equip fellows with the skills needed to drive change in their communities.
Adelphine says of her fellowship, “Placed in the Community Engagement track at Louisiana State University, I broadened my understanding of both personal and organizational leadership. Key lessons included team management, leadership development in action, and supplemental leadership, which I plan to integrate into CI-UCBC’s ongoing growth and reflection.
“I was especially inspired by the culture of volunteerism and community service deeply rooted in American initiatives. This spirit of giving back is a crucial lesson that I aim to promote within UCBC and the larger community, encouraging ongoing involvement in community service.”
Adelphine participated alongside 24 other distinguished young leaders from across the African continent, forming a dynamic and lasting network committed to making a meaningful impact upon their return home. She notes how this experience will further equip her to contribute to her work at UCBC and help bring lasting change in the DRC and beyond. “Above all, I gained profound insights from Louisiana State University’s comprehensive system promoting gender equality and supporting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Their dedicated Title IX office for handling complaints and ensuring equal access to education impressed me greatly. I am honored to collaborate with LSU to adapt and implement similar systems and policies at UCBC, tailored to our local context. These will address SGBV behavior, student and staff conduct, power-based violence, and confidential support programs, fostering a safe and supportive environment for all.”
We celebrate this milestone as a testament to Adelphine’s innovative spirit and tireless advocacy for gender equity at UCBC and throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her dedication to empowering women and advancing inclusive leadership continues to inspire those around her.
Congratulations to you Adelphine, we are brout for your success in this competition.
