Whereas Congo Initiative USA (herein referred to as CI-USA) actively solicits gifts and grants to further the mission of the organization, and
Whereas there is the potential for controversy if certain gifts are accepted, the organization has adopted the following Gift Acceptance Policy. When considering whether to solicit or accept gifts, the organization will consider the following factors:
➢ Values—whether the acceptance of the gift compromises any of the core values of CI-USA.
➢ Compatibility—whether there is compatibility between the intent of the donor and the organization’s stated mission.
➢ Public Relationships—whether acceptance of the gift will damage the reputation of CI-USA.
➢ Primary Benefit—whether the primary benefit is to CI-USA, versus the donor.
➢ Legality–whether the gift is offered in a manner that is eligible for a tax deduction.
➢ Consistency—whether acceptance of the gift is consistent with prior practice.
➢ Form of Gift—whether the gift is offered in a form that CI-USA can use without incurring substantial expense or difficulty.
➢ Effect on Future Giving—whether the gift will encourage or discourage future gifts.
All potentially controversial gifts or solicitation opportunities will be referred by the Executive Director to the Board Executive Committee, who will subsequently make a recommendation to the Board. All decisions to solicit and/or accept potentially controversial gifts will be made by the Board. The overarching consideration will be the impact of the gift on the organization.
