The Democratic Republic of Congo is once again confronting an Ebola crisis, this time on a historic scale. As of today, more than 5,290 confirmed cases and 2,500 deaths have been reported, making this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history. Health officials warn the outbreak is still growing and has not yet reached its peak.

The outbreak, first detected in May, is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a less common type of Ebola. What began in Ituri Province has now spread across six provinces. Conflict and displacement in eastern Congo are making an already difficult public health response even more complicated. People regularly move between communities in search of safety and livelihoods while insecurity can make it difficult for health workers to reach those who need care.

Contact tracing — a critical tool for containing Ebola — has struggled to keep pace. Africa CDC data reported by the Associated Press indicates that less than 10 percent of current cases are being identified among known contacts. Officials estimate that only 30 to 40 percent of actual cases may be detected.

There are reasons for hope. Congo is starting to receive a promised 70,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine. While the vaccine is not currently licensed for the Bundibugyo virus, early research suggests it could provide some protection. The doses will support a clinical trial and help protect frontline and healthcare workers.

People in eastern Congo have shown extraordinary resilience through years of conflict, displacement and uncertainty. Today, they are being asked to carry yet another burden.
